Volvo Penta’s new system won the Technical Development of the Year award at the 2026 Motor Boat Awards, celebrated at the Düsseldorf Boat Show.
Volvo Penta’s fully integrated hybrid electric IPS, due to be launched in 2026, combines electric and combustion power in a a complete package, from the rudder to the propeller. It offers proven efficiency in a hybrid electric package that provides greater comfort thanks to virtually silent cruising and docking, and quieter nights on board as no generator is required.
The electric motor is powered by scalable lithium-ion battery packs, which can be charged using both AC and DC chargers, as well as via the main motor.
The Volvo Penta Hybrid Electric IPS seamlessly integrates the Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system with assisted docking, joystick steering, Glass Cockpit and autopilot.
Volvo Penta has stated that the Volvo Penta Hybrid Electric IPS is the first step in a broader roadmap that will see the introduction of hybrid electric and fully electric IPS solutions for both yachts and commercial marine applications. The company continues to develop solutions to facilitate the transition towards more sustainable and efficient boating. Undoubtedly, winning the Technical Development of the Year award at the 2026 Motor Boat Awards validates this pioneering position.
